John Waterman papers, 1966-1981.

The John Waterman Papers consist of photocopies of Waterman's journals of his five-month solo ascent of Alaska's Mount Hunter in 1978, including an equipment list, a dream log, a calamity log, and a climbing log; a typed transcription of a portion of the climbing log; photocopies of newspaper and journal articles about the Mount Hunter ascent; a cassette tape of Joan Koponen's interview with Waterman (February 1980) concerning his plans for a solo ascent of Mount McKinley; and a photocopied newspaper article about Waterman's disappearance during his Mount McKinley climb in 1981. Also found in the collection are photocopies of other Waterman writings; Waterman's application to the Four Thousand Footer Club of the White Mountains (1966); and a daily account of "8th ascent of the south peak of Mt. McKinley, 1952" by William D. Hackett, Robert L. Anderson, Ernst Baumann, and Robert J. Goodwin.

John M. Waterman was a legendary mountain climber who lived in Fairbanks, Alaska. Among his feats was a 145 day solo traverse of Mount Hunter in the Alaska Range.
